Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

This is an approach that blends the tools and strategies of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with mindfulness techniques.

The therapist encourages and guides the client to develop their Mindfulness, which is the capacity to be fully conscious and to sustain moment-to-moment awareness of a situation, particularly when experiencing emotional turmoil.

What happens in the therapy

The therapist will help the client to identify their thoughts and feelings in the moment. In identifying the uncomfortable feelings, unpleasant sensations, distressing thoughts or unhelpful perceptions that are being experienced, the client can learn to tolerate those feelings rather than avoiding them.

With the therapist’s support, the client practices techniques to develop a calm awareness of their own body’s feelings, thoughts, and perceptions, and to pay attention to what happens in the moment. As a result the client can accept those thoughts and feelings without judgement, and move forwards.
